Gentle Laser Dentistry in Herndon for Kids and Adults
Hearing that you need gum work is rarely welcome news. Most people start imagining what the treatment involves, and many stop there and never call. Parents often feel the same way when a pediatrician brings up a tongue tie.
At Tooth Doc Family Dentistry, Dr. Ahmad uses a soft-tissue laser for much of this work. It lets her treat a very small area with a great deal of control, so the visit tends to be easier on you and healing often goes faster. She will explain what she plans to do before she starts. If something is optional, she will tell you that too.

What a Soft Tissue Dental Laser Does, and What You Can Expect
A dental laser is far less dramatic than the name suggests. It works through a slim handpiece that emits a narrow beam of light, which gently removes or reshapes gum and other soft tissue. The same light seals tiny blood vessels as it goes. That's why you usually see less bleeding and swelling than with a blade.
We use ours for patients of every age. It suits Dr. Ahmad's habit of doing the least treatment needed to solve the problem. It also means more of your family's care can happen in one place, as part of our dental services dentist Herndon.
A Laser Gingivectomy Can Clear the Way for a Filling or Crown
Some cavities start right where the tooth meets the gum. Others end up partly buried when gum tissue grows over a tooth that already needs work. Either way, Dr. Ahmad has to see the whole problem before she can fix it properly.
A gingivectomy takes care of that by trimming back the extra gum, and the laser lets her remove only what is in the way. Once the edge of the tooth is visible, a filling can seal tightly and a crown can be shaped to fit right at the gumline. That tight fit is what keeps bacteria out and helps the repair last.
Lip and Tongue Tie Frenectomies Are Quicker and Gentler at Our Herndon Office
The frenum is the thin strip of tissue under your tongue, and there is a similar one inside your upper lip. In some babies and kids, it is short or tight enough to cause trouble with nursing, eating, or speech. Parents often notice first. Adults can have the same issue, and over the years a tight band can slowly pull the gum away from the front teeth.
Releasing that band is called a frenectomy. With the laser, the treatment usually takes just a few minutes, and most children do not need scissors or stitches. We will show you the simple aftercare to do at home before you head out.
Laser Gum Contouring Can Even Out a Gummy or Uneven Smile
Gums that sit low on the teeth can make a perfectly healthy smile look short or lopsided. Sometimes that is simply how a person was built. Other times the tissue grew during braces or as a side effect of certain medicines. Laser gum contouring trims away the extra tissue and evens out the gumline, so your teeth look their real size and are a little easier to keep clean.
Laser Treatment Can Calm Inflamed Gums and Support Periodontal Care
Bleeding when you brush, or gums that look red and puffy, usually points to inflammation. It is very common, and you will not get a lecture about it here, no matter how long it has been going on.
The laser can treat the inflamed tissue and cut down on bacteria in the pockets around your teeth. We pair it with deep cleaning, such as scaling and root planing, because the cleaning still does the main work. Used together, they give your gums a better shot at tightening back up.
You do not have to know yet whether laser care is right for you or your child. Request an Appointment when you are ready, and we will go at your pace.
Small Soft Tissue Growths Can Often Be Removed in a Short, Simple Visit
Most people have had a small bump inside the cheek or lip at some point. A common one shows up right where you keep biting the same spot. Many of these are harmless, though they can be annoying.
The laser can remove a small growth like that in a short visit. Dr. Ahmad will examine it first. If anything about it calls for a specialist, she will tell you plainly and help you set that up.
Sore Gum Tissue Over a Partly Erupted Tooth Can Be Treated With a Laser
Back molars sometimes come in slowly, with a flap of gum still covering part of the top. That flap is called an operculum. Bits of food slip under it after meals, and before long the area can get swollen and sore. Teens and young adults deal with this a lot. Laser treatment removes the flap, opening the area so it is easier to clean and can calm down.
Laser Care Can Uncover a Tooth So Orthodontic Treatment Can Move Forward
Braces and clear aligners can only move a tooth that is showing. When gum tissue still covers part of a tooth that is ready to come in, the laser can gently clear it away so the orthodontic plan stays on track. We keep in touch with your orthodontist about timing. The visit itself is short, which kids and teens tend to appreciate.
Questions About Laser Dentistry
Does laser gum treatment hurt, and will I still need to be numbed?
Most patients tell us it was easier than they expected. Some laser treatments may need less numbing than older methods, and we still numb the area any time it helps. If you need a break partway through, just let Dr. Ahmad know and she will stop.
Is a dental laser safe for my child?
Soft tissue lasers have a long track record in children's dentistry and are considered safe for young patients. Your child, and everyone else in the room, wears protective glasses during treatment. We explain each step to both of you as we go.
How long does it take to heal after laser treatment?
Most people feel back to normal within a few days. Larger areas can take a bit longer than small ones, so the timeline depends on what was treated. We will send you home with simple aftercare steps and tell you what is normal along the way.
Will my insurance cover laser dentistry?
That depends on your plan and on the specific treatment, because insurance looks at what was done rather than the tool used to do it. Gum treatment and frenectomies are often partly covered. We file the claim for you, and we accept Medicaid, Smiles for Children, and CareCredit as well.
Can the laser be used on my teeth, or only on my gums?
Our laser is built for soft tissue, which means gums, lip and tongue ties, and similar areas. Fillings and crowns are still done the usual way, with the laser helping out when gum tissue needs attention first.
