Preventive Dentistry in Herndon, VA: Gentle Care That Keeps Small Problems Small

Whether it's been six months since your last cleaning or six years, you're welcome here. Preventive dentistry is the name for the ordinary stuff that keeps small problems from turning into expensive ones: the exam, the cleaning, the occasional X-ray. None of it requires you to explain why you waited. We just want to get you back on a schedule that works for your life, not an ideal one.

Ready when you are. Request an Appointment or call (703) 793-0076. We'll check your coverage first, so you know the cost before anything happens in the chair.

What Preventive Dental Care Actually Covers, and Why It's Worth the Trip

Prevention sounds like it's just about catching a cavity early, but that's only part of the picture. What happens at a preventive visit depends on what your mouth actually needs that day, not a fixed checklist. We work by a simple rule here: prevent before we fill, and fill before we ever talk about a root canal. That order protects your teeth and your budget, too. If you want the full picture beyond preventive care, you can learn more about our general dental services any time.

If This Is Your First Time Here, Your New Patient Exam in Herndon Starts With a Conversation, Not a Lecture

The first visit is where most of the nerves live, so we start there on purpose. We'll go over your health history, then take a look at your teeth and gums while you tell us what's actually been bothering you. If we think X-rays or a cleaning make sense that same day, you'll hear why before it happens. That's your new patient exam: your pace, your questions answered first

A Routine Dental Exam Catches Small Problems Before They Become Big Ones

Already a patient here? A routine dental exam is the shorter, quieter version of that same first visit. We'll see what's changed since we last saw you, from your teeth and gums to your bite, and go from there. Most visits wrap up in well under an hour. We'll tell you plainly if a dental exam is all you need today, or if something more belongs on the schedule.

Digital Dental X-Rays Let Us See What's Happening Below the Surface

Not every visit needs a full set of images. We take dental X-rays on the schedule your mouth actually needs, not a fixed calendar, and we use digital sensors that cut down on radiation compared to older film. They show us the things a visual exam can't: a cavity forming between two teeth, bone loss below the gumline, a problem with a root before it ever hurts. When we do recommend dental X-rays, you'll know exactly why beforehand, not after we've already taken the image.

Every Visit Includes an Oral Cancer Screening, Even If You Never Asked for One

You probably won't even notice it happening. During your exam, we check the tissue in your mouth, tongue, throat, and neck for anything that looks unusual. It takes a couple of minutes, and it's part of every routine visit, not something you have to request. Catching something early here can matter more than almost anything else we do at a checkup. Ask us any question you have about your oral cancer screening. We're glad to walk you through exactly what we're looking for and why.

Not sure which of these you're due for? Call (703) 793-0076 and we'll help you sort it out, plain and simple.

A Professional Teeth Cleaning in Herndon Does What Your Toothbrush Can't

Brushing and flossing only reach so far. A professional teeth cleaning removes the plaque and tartar that build up along and below your gumline, the same buildup that can turn into gum disease if left alone. It doesn't take long, and it doesn't hurt. People tend to leave saying it felt more like a fresh start than a punishment for lapsed care. However long it's been, your teeth cleaning is where we get you caught back up, gently.

Fluoride Treatment Isn't Just for Kids, and It Might Be Right for You Too

Insurance usually stops paying for fluoride on your 18th birthday, which throws people off, since we still recommend it well past that age. Coverage isn't the same as need, though. Fluoride strengthens the outer layer of your enamel and helps it resist the acid that causes cavities, and that protection doesn't expire just because you grew up.

We tend to recommend it if you have dry mouth, gum recession, a history of cavities, or dental work like crowns and bridges that are worth protecting. The treatment itself takes just a few minutes at the end of a cleaning. Ask us whether fluoride treatment makes sense for you at your next visit. We'll base the answer on your mouth, not a blanket rule.

Dental Sealants Add a Layer of Protection Right Where Cavities Like to Start

Cavities like to start in the same few places: the deep grooves on your back molars, the spots your toothbrush bristles can't fully reach, no matter how carefully you brush. A sealant is a thin coating painted over those grooves to keep food and bacteria from settling in. It's often thought of as a kids-only treatment, but any unfilled molar can benefit at any age.

The application takes only a few minutes per tooth and needs no numbing or drilling. It works best on a tooth that hasn't already been filled or crowned, so the earlier we catch a vulnerable spot, the more good a sealant can do. We'll check whether dental sealants are a good fit for you during your exam and explain exactly why if we recommend them.

Preventive Dentistry Questions We Hear Often

What if it's been years since my last cleaning or exam?

You won't get a lecture from us, however long it's been. A lot has probably changed in your mouth since your last visit, and that's exactly what the exam is for. We'll take an honest look and tell you exactly what we find. Then we build a plan together, no shame, no judgment, just a fresh start.

How often should I really come in for a cleaning and exam?
A twice-a-year schedule works well for most people, cleanings and exams included. Gum disease or a tendency to build up tartar quickly can change that, along with certain health conditions, so we may suggest coming in every three to four months instead. We'll tell you exactly which schedule fits you after your first visit, not before.

Do you accept my insurance, Medicaid, or Smiles for Children for routine visits?
We take most PPO plans, along with Medicaid and Smiles for Children, for preventive visits. Before any treatment, our team checks your coverage and gives you real numbers so nothing shows up as a surprise later. Saturday appointments are also available if getting here during the week is the bigger obstacle.

What actually happens at a first preventive visit?
Your first visit is usually an exam plus whatever else makes sense that day, X-rays, a cleaning, sometimes both. We talk before we treat, so you'll know what we're doing and why at every step. Nervous about it? Tell us, and we'll slow down.

Can I bring the whole family, including my kids, for their preventive care too?
Yes. We see adults and children in the same office, often on the same visit if that's easier for your schedule. One dental home works for the whole family here, not just one age group.
Request an Appointment when you're ready. Call us at (703) 793-0076.

We'll walk you through your benefits and give you a real number before any work begins, not after.
Saturday appointments are open.
